Fears for Fathers on the Fringes
Although it reflected disappointing findings, it was with some sense of relief that I read this weekend’s piece from the BBC highlighting the need for Dad to be present at birth. It seems that finally the message is hitting home
– parenting is not just for mothers. Click here to read the BBC story online. It’s a society change that’s needed, not a passing fathering fad. When first considering whether to start a family, the notion of co-parenting and teamwork still remains a forgotten priority. It’s all too easy for expectant mothers to take the reins and leave confused fathers-to-be behind. Maternity services which continue to make no real provision for both parents during the birth, deliver little benefit to developing the family as a whole.
I truly hope the findings from this report and the recommendations for a government-led antenatal initiative targeting both parents will help bring about change and see UK fathers promoted from the parenting sideline.
